The constancy of the holistic processing of unfamiliar faces: Evidence from the study-test consistency effect and the within-person motion and viewpoint invariance

It has been well documented that static face processing is holistic. Faces contain variant (e.g., motion, viewpoint) and invariant (race, sex) features. However, little research focused on whether holistic representations are tolerant of within-person variations. The present study thus investigated faces motion viewpoint variations by manipulating study-test consistency using a complete composite paradigm. Participants were shown two sequentially asked to judge the faces' top halves identical or different. first was dynamic rotated in depth at 30°, 60°, 90°. second either different front-view (Experiment 1a, inconsistent) 1b, consistent). In Experiment 2, manipulated within subjects, inverted included. Our results show significantly enhanced upright faces; this effect not modulated changes via rotation. Interestingly, we found for moving consistent faces, but faces. What these tell us about nature representation discussed with respect earlier current theories processing.
